Place the lentils in a colander and rinse well with cold water. Prepare them according to the package instructions using vegetable broth instead of water.
Slice the onions, chop the chives and put the chives in a small bowl.
Heat the canola oil in a non-stick frying pan over high heat. Fry the onions until they start to brown. Turn the heat to medium, add the sugar and caramelize, stirring occasionally, for approx. 2-3 minutes.
